Notes from NAILBA's Annual Meeting

The National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies met for our annual meeting last week. While our organization contributed over $200,000 to local youth organizations around the country and over $100,000 in student grants, there certainly seemed to be an undertone of concern by our partner carriers due to the economic challenges and a lack of policy sales.

Our carriers continue to be open to alternate distribution systems to distribute their products. They also are leery of government regulations and taxation. The constant need of money to run government programs tends to put our tax advantaged industry in the cross hairs of our legislators.

Also, as profit margins continue to dwindle and the carries fail to meet investor’s expectations, there is always the discussion of lower compensation.

We do have a responsibility to protect as many families and businesses as possible. We cannot and must not lose sight of our jobs. However, we must also continue to be strong with our manufacturers and critics in defending the costs of operating a business; businesses the public would rather not visit.

Times will continue to be interesting.

Passing On Wealth Without Gifts

Gifting isn't for everyone. Even though Congress has expanded the lifetime gifting and GST exemptions through 2012, some well-to-do clients won't feel comfortable about making large gifts.

This new consumer brochure discusses three strategies in which life insurance can be used to pass on family wealth without making gifts: the Standby Trust strategy, Inter-Family Loans, and Private Split Dollar arrangements.

Portability Creates Significant Malpractice Risks to Advisors

It is estimated that over 120,000,000 Americans do not have up-to-date estate plans and long term financial strategies to protect themselves or their families in the event of sickness, accidents, or untimely death.

Portability has been trumpeted by some in the media as one of the most significant estate planning benefits of The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 ("TRUIRJCA"), Sections 302(a)(1) and 303(a). Practitioners know otherwise. But knowing is not enough. Portability creates a number of significant malpractice risks which practitioners may be best advised to guard themselves against.

Bob Keebler, CPA, partner with Keebler & Associates, LLP, joins John Hancock's Randy Zipse, JD, CPA, to discuss the malpractice risks confronting practitioners when dealing with the portability election that permits the surviving spouse to use a decedent's unused exclusion amount.

Family Doesn’t Always Come First

Many caregivers are still women who grew up at a time when women often were not firmly attached to careers outside the home. That may be changing.

In a survey conducted by Genworth Financial, 40% of women and 55% of men said they would not give up their jobs to become caregivers for their aging parents.

Many elderly people rely on their adult children to provide informal support services when they are getting on in years. The caregivers perform tasks ranging from driving a parent to appointments and the grocery store to round-the-clock nursing care.

Many people don’t think about LTC until it becomes a reality for them. Don't let your clients overlook the possibility that they might require LTC. Proper planning today for an uncertain tomorrow may help preserve their hard-earned assets and enhance their options for care.
